Welcome to Adath Israel

We have been greater Newtown’s Synagogue for over 100 years and proudly continue our tradition of welcoming all to join us in celebrating Jewish tradition and learning in a progressive, modern setting. Our unique membership includes descendants of the original Jewish farmers who built the synagogue, interfaith couples, congregants from diverse Jewish backgrounds as well as those new to Jewish tradition. We look forward to sharing our synagogue and community with you and welcome you to join us for our next 100 years!

Adult Education Class

It is never too late to have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah!  And turning thirteen is overrated!

New adult b’nai mitzvah class starting Sunday February 26.  This class is open to any Jewish adult who did not have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony as a child.  For members of the congregation, this class is free and a perk of membership.  For non-members, there will be a small fee.  This is a supportive, non-competitive class where all attendees will learn to chant Torah and Haftarah, will learn to lead some of the central Hebrew prayers of a Shabbat morning service and will have an opportunity to deepen their understanding of their Judaism.  The class will culminate in a group B’nai Mitzvah ceremony where all will participate.  To join this class, please contact Katherine Kohrman at ritual@congadathisrael.org

Masking and vaccination are still optional, but we strongly recommend both, for everyone’s protection.  We ask that you please try to continue maintaining social distance when possible and be aware of and sensitive to others who may not be as comfortable with close social contact.  We are continuing to serve food in the Social Hall.  We ask that you please stay home and join us virtually if you have any symptoms of COVID-19 including fever, a cold or any cold or respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms.
